Last Christmas 2010 was our 8th trip to Cozumel and our 6th to the Iberostar Cozumel dive resort. This resort is the last resort on the south side of the island.  It was strange being, not only away at Christmas,  but also in the Mexican paradise of Cozumel.  Where’s the snow?  Where’s the cold weather?   Well, Santa did show up and Christmas Eve dinner was fantastic with all you can eat lobster and shrimp! Yummmmm lobster.  What a feast!

Most dive sites are no more than 5 to 15 minutes by boat and a couple are right in front of the resort.  We love the on site dive operator, Dressel Divers, a 5 star PADI operation. Che, our dive master for the week, did a great job showing us all the cool sea life. and kept us laughing the whole time.  So, if you get a chance to dive at the Iberostar Cozumel say “hi” to Che and all the rest of the staff at Dressel Divers from Doug & Cyndy.  Che is the one with the Christmas hat in video below.

Cozumel Mexico is well-known for some of the best SCUBA diving  in the world. The water is a warm 76 — 84 degrees with an average of 80 degrees and about 200 feet visibility on any given day. It is no surprise that SCUBA diving and tourism are Cozumel biggest industry.  If you visit Cozumel for diving, don’t forget to rent a car or a jeep and take a trip around the island. The beaches on the other side of the island are beautiful and mostly deserted.  You’ll find several roadside tourist “shops” and  with a few small cantinas and local restaurants that serve cold drinks and sea food right on the beach. Speaking of food, don’t miss the only town, San Miguel, on the island of  Cozumel.  There is plenty of shopping and lots of good restaurants.  The center of the island hosts some ancient  Mayan ruins that are fun to see and learn more of the history of the island.  If so don’t dive, but still love the water and want to see the spectacular fish, try a day trip to Chankanaab National Park on the southern part of the island.  Cozumel is a family friendly vacation destination with many things to see and do for all ages!  I highly recommend a vacation to Cozumel and taking a trip around the island.

We love to go diving in Cozumel because, for us, it’s  about  a 4 hour flight out of Denver and we are there!  You can catch flights in the morning and enjoy a beverage on  the beach at sunset that same day!  We have found the diving in Cozumel to be incomparable.  Even as we talk to people that dive all over the world, Cozumel is compared only to The Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Red Sea in Egypt as some of the most spectacular reefs and variety and size of sea life.The Iberostar is our choice because it is a great value for the money.  We are hooked on all-inclusive resorts and this meets our needs every time.  It’s close to the reefs so you don’t have 1 hour +/- boat rides to and from the dive sites.  Some are as close as 5 minutes straight out from the dock.  Their on-site dive shop — Dressel Divers  does a great job.  They have a very professional staff, nice boats, good equipment and are a joy to converse with as they are from all over the world. If you live in Colorado and are a SCUBA diver, then Cozumel is the place for you. No Colorado cold water diving here.  It’s less than 4 hours on a direct flight from Denver. Our resort of choice is the Iberostar Cozumel. In my opinion the Iberostar Cozumel is the best resort for divers. Most dive sites are between 5 to 10 minutes by boat. Dressel Divers  is the on site dive operation. Both the resort and the dive operation have a very smooth running operation. This is our 7th trip to Cozumel and our 5th at the Iberostar Resort. The Resort has great food and friendly staff. With up to 200 feet visibility you cannot beat the diving in Cozumel to that of any other location in the Caribbean. This is an all-inclusive resort. All food, drinks and most activities are included,  like 14′ Hobby Cat sail boats, sea kayaks, wind surfing and much more. The spa and diving are extra. Thanks to Mike Sánchez, our dive guide, for the great week of diving and thanks to all our other friends at Dressel Divers, Cozumel, a PADI 5 star dive operation. The underwater camera I use is the 8 MP Sea&Sea DX8000G . This camera is easy to operate and does a pretty good job even without an external flash. All the underwater photos in this gallery were shot with this camera and no external flash.  For all land shots I use the Nikon D80.

If you like wreck diving you will love Nassau, New Providence Island in the Bahamas. This area is where movie films such as James Bond’s Thunderball and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea were shot. Some of the photos in this gallery were taken at the plane and shipwreck sets of  the James Bond movie Thunderball.

The photos in this gallery were taken around the island of New Providence,  Nassau in the Bahamas.  Some of the pictures were taken at the Botanical Gardens and Zoo. They have a great collection of birds and flowers. This zoo is home to the famous marching flamingos.  The other photos in this gallery were taken on Paradise Island. This includes a few shots of the Atlantis Hotel and The Cloister which is  a 12th century French stone monastery and gardens  imporeted by William Randolph Hearst.
