An evening in downtown Aspen

We make a trip up to Aspen Colorado about once a year in the summer or fall. Aspen is an amazing place to photograph, with beautiful scenery like the Maroon Bells,  independence pass,  Mabel Colorado,  the frying pan river for the fishermen,  Glenwood hot Spring,  Colorado river and hanging lake just a day trip away.  This gallery was Photographed on  a walk around the beautiful town of Aspen Colorado in the evening last august.  The photos  were shot with up to 9 long exposures all at the same aperture and all at different shutter speeds. Then combined in Photomatix Pro HDR software. This allows you to see the detail in the shadows and highlights.

Cruise Above the Clouds Car Show 2010

The Cruise Above the Clouds Car Show was on Saturday September 11, 12 2010. It is annually brought to Woodland Park, Colorado by the Teller County Classic, Custom and Special Interest Car Club.  The show featured over 200 Classic Cars, Hot Rods and Muscle Cars.  This was the second year we photographed this car show with temperatures in the 70’s and a beautiful sunny day made for an incredible event.  In the afternoon the car owners went on the Poker Run to Cripple Creek, Colorado.  The car show continued on Sunday in Cripple Creek.  Each photo in this gallery starts off as 5 separate photographs at 5 different exposures and combined with a process called HDR or High Dynamic-Range photography.  This allows one to see the detail in the shadows and highlights.  It also has the ability to create some pretty cool special effects.

Phantom Canyon and Victor Colorado

Phantom Canyon is one of three routes From which starts at canyon city area to victor Colorado. The other routes are High Park and Shelf road. All are part of the Gold belt Scenic and Historic Tour. In 1894 the route was first a railroad build to transport the gold ore from Victor to Florence Colorado.  Today Phantom Canyon scenic road is one of Colorado’s hidden treasures and a photographers dream.

The Hoodoos of Colorado Springs

Hoodoos are a strange geological rock formation found mainly in Bryce Canyon National Park, Colorado and the Badlands of South Dakota. Their formation consist of  different layers of hard and soft sedimentary rock. Generally the hard layers being on top, erosion of the softer layers of rock gives them their strange unusual chimney or mushroom  shapes. The size of the Hoodoos in the gallery range from a couple feet  to about 50 feet and are located in Woodman Valley Park in Colorado Springs.  One of formations in the area is called the Dutch Wedding Rock, which is not accessable due to being on private land. Hoodoos in Bryce Canyon National Park can be more than 100 feet tall.

Maroon Bells Aspen Colorado

The Maroon Bells, just outside of Aspen Colorado, are one of the most photographed group of mountains  in Colorado.  To get there from Aspen head west on Maroon Creek Road just south of town.  The short drive up Maroon Creek Drive is worth the trip alone for its beauty,  especially in the fall.  At the end of the road park your vehicle and take a short walk to Maroon Lake. The views of the lake and the mountains are spectacular.  A sight not to be missed. There’s plenty of hiking and fishing in the area along with wildlife viewing. In past trips we have seen deer, elk, beaver, blue heron, coyote, fox and all kinds of birds. Though we have not seen a bear ourselves, you may have the opportunity to see one.  In the spring and summer the wildflowers are not to be missed as they cover the sides of the trails and fields.

United States Air Force Academy Chapel

The photos in this gallery were shot at the United States Air Force Academy Chapel in Colorado Springs. The chapel was designed by architect Walter Netsch. The chapel is a non-denominational Protestant house of worship. What people may not realize is that along with the main Protestant chapel that in the lower level there’s a Catholic chapel, a Jewish chapel, a Buddhist chapel and an all faiths meeting room for small groups. As you enter the main chapel upstairs,  you get the feeling of being in a spaceship. The ceilings are about 100 feet tall with beautiful stained glass windows and a huge pipe organ. Looking from the inside out is incredible.  A few of years ago I had the opportunity to attend a beautiful  military wedding of one of my son’s best friends in this chapel — an event not to be missed.  So if you are ever in Colorado Springs, visit the United States Air Force Academy Chapel. The visitor’s center and chapel are open daily and on weekends all year except when closed on major holidays. You will not be disappointed.

On Friday, August 28, 2009 the United States Air Force Academy Chapel celebrated its 50 year anniversary of the start of its construction. The chapel was completed in 1963.
