Independence Pass Colorado

Independence Pass is located between Twin Lakes on the east and Aspen Colorado on the west, on Colorado Hwy. 82.  The pass is a steep, winding, paved road with some parts without guard rails. One short section on the Aspen side  narrows down to one lane. It rises to a height of about 12095 feet above sea level.  At that point you reach the Continental Divide which is above the tree line with spectacular vistas of both sides of the divide .  This makes for an incredible drive especially in the fall with the golden aspen trees. Just remember, this pass is closed in the Winter and may close earlier in the Fall because of weather.  The sights along this road starting from the east side include the town of  Twin Lakes, Independence Pass, the ghost town ruins of Independence, the Grotto and the Devil’s Punchbowl. This road is one not to miss. The photos in this gallery were shot at the Devil’s Punchbowl, the Grotto and Twin Lakes.

Summertime Around the Streets of Aspen Colorado

Aspen Colorado started out as a silver mining town in 1879.  Today Aspen is the ski town of the rich and famous in the winter. But , in the summer, the rest of us can enjoy the beauty of the areas in and around Aspen.  There’s camping and reasonable priced lodging at the many ski condos around Aspen and Snowmass Village.  The photos in this  gallery were shot around the back streets of Aspen with beautiful Victorian homes, cottages and gardens. So, don’t miss Aspen in the summer.

There is a river with beaver ponds and a trailhead for Mt Oxford. There are several campgrounds along with a number dispersed campsites along the road. The first photo in this gallery is from the Climax Mine. The next 4 photos are located north of  County Road 390. The rest where shot at Vicksburg & Winfield, Colorado. These ghost towns sprung up from the mining in the area during the 1880s.

The Ghosts Of Leadville Colorado in HDR

The photos in this gallery were shot in and around Leadville Colorado. Leadville is an old mining town set at an elevation over 10000 feet above sea level. Visiting the old buildings around the town bring up thoughts of  ghosts from the 1880’s. Each photo  in this Gallery starts off as 3 separate photographs at 3 different exposures  and combined with a process called HDR or High Dynamic-Range. This allows one to see the detail in the shadows and highlights. It also has the ability to create some pretty cool special effects.

There are plenty of activities year round. Most of the photos in this gallery were shot at the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens. Others were shot on Vail Mountain and at Booth Falls.

Wildflowers of Westcliffe

Westcliffe Colorado is a small ranching town located in a valley between the Sangre De Cristo Mountains and the Wet Mountains. The large amount of rain this spring  has contributed to an abundance of wildflowers around Westcliffe.  Some of the photos were also shot nearby at Bishops Castle,  a strange quirky place in the heart of the Wet Mountains.  Kids love hiking through the castle.
